WHAT LIFE WAS LIKE FOR OUR ANCESTORS
As you read this, l hope that you will try to get a feel for what life must have been like for our ancestors. Ancestors such as herman heinrich heuermann who lived in Germany. What had life been for them in the turbulent years between the end of the Thirty Years war 1616-1648 and their leaving Germany in 1865. It was the period in which the German people gradually put together a unified nation in 1871. Also, try to put yourself with the family that undertook the voyage to America . Picture yourself on the deck of a sailing ship that depended on the variable winds and had to withstand storms at sea. Upon arrival at New York, speaking a foreign language, how would you manage to get to Texas, via North Carolina at a time when all modes of travel were primitive by today's standards .
It is amazing that the sons and daughter of Herman Heinrich Heuermann and Thomas O Day were able to begin new lives in the new land of Texas and to reach the degree of success that they reached in the cities of Texas and North Carolina. One, an immigrant who could speak no english, the other an assumed Confederate soldier and possible prisoner of war.How many of us would have been able to accomplish what they did for ultimate benefit.
It is unfortunate this compilation of family history was not attempted before the deaths of our parents and grandparents , aunts and uncles and anyone else who had personal memories of the family and its history. All of us should strive to see that we leave to our sons and daughters and grandchildren the knowledge that we have about our family history.
