FOREWORD
WHY I AM WRITING A GENEALOGY
Through the interest shown by many of those in the family, I decided to try to write our family history, as best I could. Regretably, I am not being a professional writer so you must bear with the gramatical disaters. I have tried to use a format in that non genealogist would appreciate so please bear with the text and lineage as l`m recording this for genealogical purposes also.
I can not pinpoint when I decided that I wanted in someway to begin recording the history of our family but the family reunions were of great help. I think the conversataions with Grandam Laura Heuermann and Aunt Nanny Carry was the catalyst in 1979.
As I progressed with the research into our ancestry and relatives with a common bloodline, I began to feel a sense of continuity with all of the many generations of our ancestors . lt was like learning the answer to the question so often asked by most young children; where did I come from?
lt has been 32 years since I first became interested in researching the history o( our Heuermann and Day family.
I guess I started on this endeavor to fill a personal need but, this effort really is for anyone who has an intetrest in the Heuermann or Day line or their "roots" become important to them. And it is for any other interested person who accepts the responsibility to try to help fill the gaps in the Heuermann or Day line and to help annotate the life experiences of the third through seventh generation Heuermann's before it becomes too late. I hope someone will continue this work when I am gone.
SOURCES OF INFORMATION
Much material is left out but noted in the sources. Much has been used. All lines are proven except those entries that are preceded by "theory" or "possibly" or "about'. I have tried to present all of the family information in a simple manner for easy reading. The use of footnotes and other such methods uised by professional genealogists has been avoided for simplicity. I do not profess to be a writer so why should I write this in anything but an amateur's style. I have privided a sources web page that will have copies of source material.
This work includes most of my collected material in detail from immigrant Herman Heinrich Heuermann down through the 7th generation and emigrant T O Day through the 8th generation. Family Group Sheets are available on most their descendants. That includes vital information on all of my cousins but not necessarily their families . A sample Family group Sheet and Four generation Pedigree charts are included as examples .
UNSOLVED MYSTERIES
I have spent many hours puzzling over the many unsolved mysteries within our family. It is regrettable that there are many places that information stops abruptly in our heritage. There are many unanswered questions. This is especially true in regards to the time period when Herman Heinrich landed in New York in 1865 and shows up in Texas married to Sophie Smith in 1872. Information for that 7 year period is non existent. Simultaneously, Thomas Oscar Day left North Carolina and migrated to Texas. Did the two know each in North Carolina? Is it possible they traveled together? Remembering that Herman Heinrich Heuermann could not speak English, someone interpreted for him. You can read more about tis and other unsolved mysteries elsewhere in this website.
PLACES VISITED TO GATHER MATERIAL
ln the preparation of this manuscript' and website Liz and I have visited court houses in Austin, Bastrop, Dewitt, Fayette, and Grimes counties in Texas; genealogy libraries in Houston, San Antonio, Conroe, and Dallas; the State Archives in Austin, Texas and the National Archives in Washington D. C. I still hope to travel to North Carolina to research the Day side more. I, as well as Liz and my ex wife Carol Jensen, have walked through more cemeteries in Texas and read more tombstones than I care to to remember. Back in the old days (the 70s thru 90's), we researched information on readers viewing microfiche, microfilm, maps, census reports and shipping lists. Now of course much of it on the Internet.
WHY THIS WEBSITE
A genealogist worst task is deciding when to stop for awhile and put pen to paper collected material into some order for print. This is a never ending search and is usually delayed. The wonderfful thing about websites is the ease that it can be updated when errors are found or new information becomes vailable. That is hard to do with a book. A point was reached where I had to stop accumulating additional material and set a deadline for completing the Heuermann/Day research part of my genealogy . lt was brought about by age, time constraints and a beginning realization of my own mortality.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
To all of you who have contributed to this effort I give a hearty thank you! I also am very pleased lo be able to preserve a portion of the history of our family. Our family is so wonderful to work with. Everyone is so sharing with what ever they have, whether it is a remembrance, a picture of a tomstone or a family recipe. I hope this website will grow and grow so please don't hesitate to email me whatever you may have. I will put it up and show you as the source.
CONTINUING ON
By the very nature of a genealogical study, and because birthing continues, and because death must come to all of us, a work of this type can never be complete. It can never be completed by one person either, because that person will die someday.ln order to put a genealogical work into a permanent form, the genealogist must find an arbitrary stopping place, a point in time to relate to others what has been discovered so that others can continue to expand the history of our family, without researching areas already proven up. I hope this website, incomplete as it is, will inspire many of you to complete and correct the record of your immediate family, and has assisted you in learning more about our roots.
CLOSING
In summary, I have read numerous books and 'how to" articles all in an effort to educate myself as to how to do it right. Accuracy of information is paramount so please do not hesitate to email with any corrctions or additions. I hope that you will enjoy your family as much as I have enjoyed living with them these many years.
In closing, I would appreciate any comments that you have on this project and website.

Note to muself
I need a separate page for this.
Most members of our family are eligible for membership in many of the heritage organizations snd associations.
MEMBERSHIPS IN HISTORICAL ORGANIZATIONS
At the present, the Heuermann or Day line has no proven connection to the Revolutionary War. I suspect but can prove it up yet that The Day side or Brawley side will most likely trace back to this era. If we have a soldier who was in this war, then we will be eligible for membership in or admission to one of the so-catted patriotic organizations, such as Daughters (or Sons) of the American Revolution. Neither can we prove that any Day or Brawley ancestors were in Texas before the demise of the Republic of Texas so membership in Daughters or Sons of the Republic of Texas is not possible.
ln the years that l spent corresponding with and interviewing Heuermann and Day family members, l discovered several evidences that the Day line can be traced to the Civil War.
In concluding this section, our relationship to ancestors can be proven up in several ways. If you would like to join or participate in one of these patriotic groups, and additional documentation is needed,it is available.
With all us working together for so many yeras, we have put together data about virtually all of our grandfather Thomas O Day and his his wife Nancy A Brawley came to Texas in the 1870's from North Carolina
Herman Heinrich Heuermann arrived in America in 1865 and married a lady from North Carolina, Annie Sophie Schmidt in 1872 in Auston County texas. I wonder if there was a conection back in North Carolina.
